Brick fences are one of the most common jobs we quote in Melbourne, and the first question is always the same: what will it cost? The honest answer is that it depends, but here is what actually moves the number.
What drives the price
- Height and length. More wall means more bricks, more mortar and more labour. A low front fence is a very different job to a tall privacy wall.
- Single or double brick. A double-skin wall uses roughly twice the brick and takes longer to lay.
- The brick itself. Standard commons are cheaper than face bricks, and recycled or heritage bricks cost more again.
- Footings. A proper reinforced footing is not optional, and the reactive clay soils common around Melbourne can mean more concrete and steel.
- Site access. A tight side return or a sloping block slows everything down.
- Piers, capping and detail. Rendered piers, brick-on-edge capping and feature courses all add finish, and a little time.
So what is the range?
Every job is different, so we do not quote a fence sight unseen. A simple low front fence sits at the lower end, and a tall double-brick privacy wall with piers and capping sits well above it. The only number that matters is the one after a site visit.
